Product Description
Get Rich, Don't Bitch

Today, more than ever before, wealth is something every woman has the power to create. Yet Jean Chatzky constantly hears all the excuses why women can’t and don’t master their money. Now, she reveals the secrets and the strategies she created to take control of her own money–strategies through which she gained her “money confidence.” It’s time for you to find yours!

In Make Money, Not Excuses Jean shares these valuable lessons:

• Where to start
• How to get over your “I’m not smart enough to deal with money” feelings
• Why being a “good-enough investor” will make more money for you in
the long-term (while trying to be a “great investor” will drive you crazy)
• How (and where) to save your money
• Why women make better investors––and higher returns––than men
• How to track where you’re overspending
• How to pay off your debt

Jean is unsurpassed in her ability to explain money and investing in simple, straightforward ways. Here she breaks down the scariest parts of dealing with money–from investing in stocks to saving for your retirement–and makes them practical, easy, empowering, and, yes, even enjoyable. This is your road map to real wealth.

5 out of 5 stars You get used to her voice.   March 3, 2010
L. R. Wilson (New York, NY)
Chatzky is your standard variety, soft-spoken, english-major type and she speaks accordingly; as such it will take a few minutes to get used to her voice, but when you do, oh my, you will love this woman. I am a guy, so it is not tailored for me, however, when I bought a copy for my girlfriend and was in the process of importing it to itunes so she could put it on her ipod, I listened to a few copies and was hooked. She gives great advice, is practical about everything and is even specific about what we can do right away to implement much of what she presents. A great listed (especially when she uses the word "Bitch"--so awesome) and I have even implemented the Chatzky method of money management into my life even more fervently that the woman for whom i purchased the audiobook initially. Really good stuff.

1 out of 5 stars Pretty Simplistic Advice   October 2, 2009

The focus of this book seems to be on married women who like to go shopping, are totally clueless about money, their own net worth, checking accounts, investments, etc. who let their husbands make all of the financial decisions. The message seems to be that this isn't a good thing and women should watch their spending and be involved in the family financial decisions. Well, duh. The financial advice in the book is really basic, common sense stuff and seems to be directed a kind of 1950s era, June Cleaver kind of audience. I can't say that I personally know any women are so clueless about their finances that the simplistic advice in this book would really be of benefit to them. If you do need very simple financial advice, there are probably thousands, if not millions, of web sites with basic financial advice that a person could read for free on the Internet instead of buying this book.

4 out of 5 stars Income - Expenses = Leftover   August 15, 2009

What a simple book about finances. The main theme that I got from this book is this:

Income - Expenses = Leftover

The author addresses all three in this book. For income, you need to make relatively decent money. For expenses, you need to spend less than you make. Whatever is left over must be saved and invested. This is the formula for getting ahead. The author just says it a way such as, you need to save and invest regularly, control your spending, and control your debt. That's how simple it is. However, implementing it is much harder. If you don't let your left over money work for you, then you will always work for your money with your labor, and there are limitations on how many hours you have. But there are no limitations on how much money you can have working for you. Great book.

4 out of 5 stars Financial Sanity and Security: Here's How!   September 14, 2008

"Make Money Not Excuses" is a user-friendly motivational and practical guide for making the decision (and taking the first steps) to becoming secure in one's financial present and long-term future. I read this book cover-to-cover in just two days -- it really got me excited about making, saving, and investing my money!

Previously, I have used David Bach's "The Automatic Millionaire" and "Smart Women Finish Rich" to develop and maintain my financial plan. I preferred Bach's books for the specific to-dos in regards to saving and investing money -- I felt that he provided more concrete examples and advice for making decisions and taking the appropriate next steps. While Chatzky's book is also motivational and has the advantage of addressing many "female" concerns (e.g., wanting to invest, but lacking the confidence to do so) and habits (e.g., I have nothing to wear!), she offers fewer directions for developing a true action plan. Bach got me on track with my savings, retirement investments and debt-management -- Chatzky helped maintain my motivation and, by echoing many of the same principles as Bach, reminded me of some outstanding responsibilities that I have procrastinated (e.g., life and disability insurance).

For women who are just starting to take control of their finances, or who are looking for ways to make their money work harder for the long-run, I would recommend starting with "Smart Women Finish Rich" and then following up with "Make Money Not Excuses." As a woman in my 20s, it feels great to realize that my financial situation is under control and that I am working every day to secure a stable future. Remember, it's not how much money you make, it's how much you keep... and how you make it work for you!
